"slověninъ" meaning in Proto-Slavic

See slověninъ in All languages combined, or Wiktionary

Noun

Etymology: From *Slovǫta (“Dnieper”) + *-ěninъ or other, similar river name, compare Russian Слуя (Sluja), Polish Sława, Sławica, Serbo-Croatian Славница/Slavnica. The suffix *-ěninъ/*-janinъ is added only to geographical/territorial terms and place names, making it hard to assume other etymologies. Further etymology unclear. It could also derive from some place name, but such name is not attested (sometimes the hypothetical name *Slovy is mentioned), but compare Lithuanian village Šlavė́nai (phonetically identical to *slověne pl) on the river Šlavė̃. Obsolete and other etymologies * From *slovo (“word; speech”), literally, “man of own speech, man who speak the same language”; * From *sluti, *slovǫ (“to express in words, to utter”), literally, “man whose language is understandable”; * From *slava (“glory, fame”), literally, “man of a famous tribe”; * L. Masing, A. Stender-Petersen: borrowed from unattested Germanic word for Slavic peoples, meaning “people whose language is not understandable”, from Proto-Germanic [Term?] (“to be quiet”) (compare Gothic 𐍃𐌻𐌰𐍅𐌰𐌽 (slawan)), similar to Proto-Slavic *němьcь (“Teuton, German”), from *němъ (“mute”); * Z. Gołąb: from Proto-Indo-European *swebʰen (from *swé (“self”)), with a dissimilation of w - bʰ to l - bʰ (compare *svoboda : *sloboda) and influenced by *slovo (“word; speech”) by folk etymology; * J. J. Mikkola: from Proto-Indo-European *leh₂wos (“people”), cognate with Ancient Greek λᾱός (lāós, “people; soldier”) Etymology templates: {{suf|sla-pro|*Slovǫta|*-ěninъ|t1=Dnieper}} *Slovǫta (“Dnieper”) + *-ěninъ, {{cog|ru|Слуя}} Russian Слуя (Sluja), {{cog|pl|Sława}} Polish Sława, {{cog|sh|Славница//Slavnica}} Serbo-Croatian Славница/Slavnica, {{unc|sla-pro|title=unclear}} unclear, {{cog|lt|-}} Lithuanian, {{m-g|man of own speech, man who speak the same language}} “man of own speech, man who speak the same language”, {{lit|man of own speech, man who speak the same language|nocap=1}} literally, “man of own speech, man who speak the same language”, {{m-g|man whose language is understandable}} “man whose language is understandable”, {{lit|man whose language is understandable|nocap=1}} literally, “man whose language is understandable”, {{m-g|man of a famous tribe}} “man of a famous tribe”, {{lit|man of a famous tribe|nocap=1}} literally, “man of a famous tribe”, {{glink|borrowed}} borrowed, {{cog|gem}} Germanic, {{der|sla-pro|gem-pro||nocat=1|t=to be quiet}} Proto-Germanic [Term?] (“to be quiet”), {{cog|got|𐍃𐌻𐌰𐍅𐌰𐌽}} Gothic 𐍃𐌻𐌰𐍅𐌰𐌽 (slawan), {{cog|sla-pro|*němьcь|t=Teuton, German}} Proto-Slavic *němьcь (“Teuton, German”), {{inh|sla-pro|ine-pro||*swebʰen|nocat=1}} Proto-Indo-European *swebʰen, {{inh|sla-pro|ine-pro|*leh₂wos|nocat=1|t=people}} Proto-Indo-European *leh₂wos (“people”), {{cog|grc|λᾱός|t=people; soldier}} Ancient Greek λᾱός (lāós, “people; soldier”) Inflection templates: {{sla-decl-noun-table|*slověninъ|*slověninъ|*slověninа|*slověnině|*slověninu|*slověninomь|*slověnine|*slověnina|*slověnina|*slověninu|*slověninu|*slověninoma|*slověninoma|*slověnina|*slověne|*slověni|*slověnъ|*slověnьxъ|*slověnьmъ|*slověnьmi|*slověne}} Forms: slověnъka [feminine], slověnьskъ [adjective], no-table-tags [table-tags], slověninъ [nominative, singular], slověnina [dual, nominative], slověne [nominative, plural], slověninъ [accusative, singular], slověnina [accusative, dual], slověni [accusative, plural], slověninа [genitive, singular], slověninu [dual, genitive], slověnъ [genitive, plural], slověnině [locative, singular], slověninu [dual, locative], slověnьxъ [locative, plural], slověninu [dative, singular], slověninoma [dative, dual], slověnьmъ [dative, plural], slověninomь [instrumental, singular], slověninoma [dual, instrumental], slověnьmi [instrumental, plural], slověnine [singular, vocative], slověnina [dual, vocative], slověne [plural, vocative]

"etymology_text": "From *Slovǫta (“Dnieper”) + *-ěninъ or other, similar river name, compare Russian Слуя (Sluja), Polish Sława, Sławica, Serbo-Croatian Славница/Slavnica. The suffix *-ěninъ/*-janinъ is added only to geographical/territorial terms and place names, making it hard to assume other etymologies. Further etymology unclear.\nIt could also derive from some place name, but such name is not attested (sometimes the hypothetical name *Slovy is mentioned), but compare Lithuanian village Šlavė́nai (phonetically identical to *slověne pl) on the river Šlavė̃.\nObsolete and other etymologies\n* From *slovo (“word; speech”), literally, “man of own speech, man who speak the same language”;\n* From *sluti, *slovǫ (“to express in words, to utter”), literally, “man whose language is understandable”;\n* From *slava (“glory, fame”), literally, “man of a famous tribe”;\n* L. Masing, A. Stender-Petersen: borrowed from unattested Germanic word for Slavic peoples, meaning “people whose language is not understandable”, from Proto-Germanic [Term?] (“to be quiet”) (compare Gothic 𐍃𐌻𐌰𐍅𐌰𐌽 (slawan)), similar to Proto-Slavic *němьcь (“Teuton, German”), from *němъ (“mute”);\n* Z. Gołąb: from Proto-Indo-European *swebʰen (from *swé (“self”)), with a dissimilation of w - bʰ to l - bʰ (compare *svoboda : *sloboda) and influenced by *slovo (“word; speech”) by folk etymology;\n* J. J. Mikkola: from Proto-Indo-European *leh₂wos (“people”), cognate with Ancient Greek λᾱός (lāós, “people; soldier”)",
