Праславянское от прабалтослав. *gīˀwás; родственно лит. gývas, латыш. dzîvs «живой, свежий, бодрый», др.-прусск. gijwans (вин. мн.); восходит к праиндоевр. *gʷih₃wós от праиндоевр. *gweie- «жить» (откуда также санскр. जीव (jīva) «живой», др.-перс. ǰīva- «живущий», лат. vīvus, греч. βίος «жизнь», гот. 𐌵𐌹𐌿𐍃 (qius) «живой», др.-в.-нем. quес, сhесh, нем.
