D’après Cox, repris par d’autres auteurs, la racine du mot se retrouve en sanskrit et est commune à celle du dieu latin Mars et du dieu indien Maruts, divinité de la tempête. Max Müller considère également que la racine indo-européenne *Mar présente en sanskrit est commune à Mars et Arès. Julius Pokorny en fait lui un emprunt à la mythologie hittite (tout comme le mythe d’Atlas ; voyez Ἄτλας) et rapproche le mot de ὄρνις, órnis dont le sens initial est « aigle : oiseau royal, oiseau de proie »."
