"ọgẹdẹ" meaning in Yoruba

See ọgẹdẹ in All languages combined, or Wiktionary

Noun

IPA: /ɔ̀.ɡɛ̀.dɛ̀/ Forms: ọ̀gẹ̀dẹ̀ [canonical]
Etymology: Cognates include Edo ọghẹdẹ and Igbo ògèdè, Igbo ọ̀gèdè. This may be reconstructed to Proto-Yoruboid if such a term existed for an older food crop not bananas. Bananas reached West Africa centuries after the Proto-Yoruboid language had dispersed, but may have come in contact with Proto-Yoruba speakers. Thus, it is unclear if this term was borrowed and then transversed the many people groups as they traded and came into contact with the banana (see the term kòkódìà), or if a semantic shift occurred (see the term ọkà). The terms for spoken varieties (english: banana, plantain), now deemed dialects of Yorùbá in Nigeria (i.e. Southeast Yorùbá, Northwest Yorùbá, Central Yorùbá, and Northeast Yorùbá), have converged with those of Standard Yorùbá leading to the creation of what can be labeled Common Yorùbá. It can be assumed that the Standard Yorùbá term can also be used in most Nigerian varieties alongside native terms (Funṣọ Akere, 1977), especially amongst younger speakers. This does not apply to the other Nigerian Yoruboid languages of Ìṣẹkírì and Olùkùmi, nor the Èdè Languages of Benin and Togo Derived forms: odi ọ̀gẹ̀dẹ̀, ọlọ́gẹ̀dẹ̀ (english: plantain seller), ọtí ọ̀gẹ̀dẹ̀, ọ̀gẹ̀dẹ̀ abo, ọ̀gẹ̀dẹ̀ dòdò, ọ̀gẹ̀dẹ̀ dúdú, ọ̀gẹ̀dẹ̀ lóbòóye, ọ̀gẹ̀dẹ̀ pípọ́n, ọ̀gẹ̀dẹ̀ wẹẹrẹ, ọ̀gẹ̀dẹ̀ àgbagbà (english: plaintain), ọ̀gẹ̀dẹ̀ àkìmọ́lẹ̀, ọ̀gẹ̀dẹ̀ àpáńtà, ọ̀gẹ̀dẹ̀ ìbílẹ̀, ọ̀gẹ̀dẹ̀-lílá, ọ̀gẹ̀dẹ̀-ntiti òyìnbó, ọ̀gẹ̀dẹ̀-odò, ọ̀gẹ̀dẹ̀-ọ̀mìnì, pàràká ọ̀gẹ̀dẹ̀, ìtì ọ̀gẹ̀dẹ̀

Bananas reached West Africa centuries after the Proto-Yoruboid language had dispersed, but may have come in contact with Proto-Yoruba speakers. Thus, it is unclear if this term was borrowed and then transversed the many people groups as they traded and came into contact with the banana (see the term kòkódìà), or if a semantic shift occurred (see the term ọkà).",
