Etymology: From Classical Persian مهران (mihrān). Cognate with Punjabi مہران (mehrān) and Sindhi مَهَراڻُ (maharāṇu), Persian borrowings. An ancient Persianate name for the Indus, it was already in use during the earliest medieval era. The accomplished Arab grammarian Ibn Duraid in the 9ᵗʰ century used the name to describe the "great river" in what is today Pakistan.
