Possibly linked to Proto-Indo-European *mod-ye/o- or *mēdye/o-, derivatives of *med- (“to measure, give advice, heal”) (whence Latin meditor), or alternatively to *meh₁-ye/o- from *meh₁- (“to measure”) (whence Latin mētior).
