Proverb

Etymology: Literally, “the emperor is naked”. From the 1837 story The Emperor's New Clothes by H.C. Andersen, in which a gullible emperor is fooled by two swindlers into wearing "clothes that are invisible to those who are either incompetent or stupid". These magical clothes do not, in fact, exist. The truth is only later revealed to the emperor and the equally fooled public by a child who, during a parade, shouts, "The emperor is naked!"
