According to Coromines and Pascual, first attested in the 15th century in Juan de Mena and the marquis of Santillana, replacing the inherited Old Spanish hueste. The borrowing was read with the “native” Old Spanish value of x, /ʃ/, instead of /ks/, cf. ejemplo.
