Root

IPA: /stʰɐɡ/ [Vedic], /s̪t̪ʰɐɡ/ [Classical-Sanskrit] Forms: sthag [romanization]
Etymology: Traditionally derived from Proto-Indo-European *(s)teg- (“to cover”) and compared to Ancient Greek στέγω (stégō, “to cover closely”). However, Mayrhofer doubts this, and suggests an alternative that this root, along with स्तक् (stak, “to strike against”) and ढक्कन (ḍhakkana, “shutting (of a door)”) (the latter which he considers a spoken variant), could be derived from the same non-Indo-Aryan source.
