Root

IPA: /ʋɐɳʈ/ [Vedic], /ʋɐɳʈ/ [Classical-Sanskrit] Forms: vaṇṭ [romanization]
Etymology: Of unknown origin. Attempts to connect the root to Dravidian have been unsuccessful. There is a vague similarity with Chinese 頒/颁 (bān, “to confer”) and/or 分 (fēn, “to divide, distribute”). Considering the root is only attested in Classical onwards, this word was possibly borrowed from Sinitic merchants from Southern China who pronounced the word/s closer to van or ven. The ट् is problematic, however; it is perhaps an ad hoc addition to differentiate from वनोति (vanoti, meaning “to desire, love or wish for”) Etymology templates: {{unknown|sa|nocap=1}} unknown, {{bor|sa|dra}} Dravidian Head templates: {{head|sa|root|head=|tr=}} वण्ट् • (vaṇṭ), {{sa-root}} वण्ट् • (vaṇṭ)
  1. to partition, apportion, share, divide Tags: morpheme Synonyms: बण्ट् (baṇṭ) Derived forms: वण्टति (vaṇṭati), वण्टयति (vaṇṭayati), वण्टापयति (vaṇṭāpayati), वण्ट्यते (vaṇṭyate), वण्ट्यमान (vaṇṭyamāna)
