Noun

IPA: /ɐ́ɾ.mɐ/ [Vedic], /ɐɾ.mɐ/ [Classical-Sanskrit]
Etymology: Etymology tree Proto-Indo-European *h₂el-der. Sanskrit अर्म (arma) Inherited from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hálmas, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂él-mos, from *h₂el- (“to nourish”). Cognate with Tocharian B ālme (“well”), Latin Almus (“name of a river”). However, while Mayrhofer accepts this etymology, he also argues for the meaning "well" ("Brunnen") on the basis of the cognates, which accords with e.g. Griffith's translation "pit" but is harder to reconcile with most (older) dictionaries' definition of "ruins". In KEWA, Mayrhofer listed the traditional definition of "ruins". Etymology templates: {{etymon|sa|der|ine-pro>*h₂el->grow|id=ruins|tree=1}} Etymology tree Proto-Indo-European *h₂el-der.
