Etymology: ру́сский (rússkij, “a Russian”) + рез (rez, “cut, one who cuts, killer”). Attested since 2007 by the nationalist writer Konstantin Krylov referring to people who murder ethnic Russians, as a bogeyman in Russian nationalist discourse. Popularized during the 2022 invasion of Ukraine by Ukrainian Internet users as an Internet meme against Russian soldiers, in mockery towards pro-invasion supporters.
