Etymology: рус- (rus-) + -ня (-nja) or Русь (Rusʹ) + -ня (-nja). This slur was coined during the Second Chechen War by the Chechen terrorist Shamil Basayev in analogy of the name Чечня́ (Čečnjá), as the -ня suffix was seen by him as derogatory for referring Chechens as a mob.
