Etymology: From Old East Slavic доло́вь~доло́ви (dolóvĭ~dolóvi) (with loss of intervocalic /v/), the dative singular of Old East Slavic долъ (dolŭ, “bottom, pit”), from Proto-Slavic *dolъ. A form доло́вь (dolóvʹ) survives in dialectal usage. Compare Belarusian дало́ў (dalóŭ), Ukrainian долíв (dolív), Old Czech dolov (modern dolů), Slovak dolu.
