Etymology: Likely originally a compound with *ëppe (“father-in-law”) as the second member. The first member is not known as an independent word, but may be also reflected in Proto-Samic *vuonēm (“mother-in-law”) (perhaps from *ënɜ + *emä). In such a case, the word may originally have been a dvandva compound (mother-in-law + father-in-law to mean "In-law" in general).
