Suffix

Etymology: Uncertain. There have been various ad hoc attempts to explain concrete derivatives. Encountered as an extension to roots in parallel to resembling derivatives with other extensions, e.g.: * Proto-Slavic *glupъ (“stupid”): compared with Proto-Slavic *glumъ, *gluxъ (“deaf”). * Proto-Slavic *vorpъ (“assault, ripple, wrinkle”): compared with Proto-Slavic *verti (“to shove, to thrust”), *vьrěti (“to brew, to boil”), *vьrlъ (“enraged, violent”) and forms related to Proto-Slavic *vьrtěti (“to turn, to rotate”). Possibly inherited from Proto-Indo-European *-pos, cf. Sanskrit वर्पस् (varpas, “shape, form”). Compare Lithuanian -ópas attested in Lithuanian *antrópas (“different”), savópas (“particular”), dvejópas (“binary”), etc. Etymology templates: {{unc|sla-pro}} Uncertain, {{cog|sla-pro|*glupъ||stupid}} Proto-Slavic *glupъ (“stupid”), {{cog|sla-pro|*glumъ||}} Proto-Slavic *glumъ, {{cog|sla-pro|*vorpъ||assault, ripple, wrinkle}} Proto-Slavic *vorpъ (“assault, ripple, wrinkle”), {{cog|sla-pro|*verti||to shove, to thrust}} Proto-Slavic *verti (“to shove, to thrust”), {{cog|sla-pro|*vьrtěti||to turn, to rotate}} Proto-Slavic *vьrtěti (“to turn, to rotate”), {{cog|ine-pro|*-pos}} Proto-Indo-European *-pos, {{cog|sa|वर्पस्||shape, form}} Sanskrit वर्पस् (varpas, “shape, form”), {{cog|lt|-ópas}} Lithuanian -ópas, {{cog|lt|*antrópas||different}} Lithuanian *antrópas (“different”)
