Preposition

Etymology: Suggested to be contracted from *trāē, from earlier *trāsē, dative singular of *trās, from earlier *trāns (“across”). Alternatively, from pre-Celtic Proto-Indo-European *tr̥h₂éy, alternative form of *tr̥h₂és, both fossilized inflected forms of a root noun **térh₂s. In either case, derived from the root *terh₂- (“to cross, go through”). Etymology templates: {{root|cel-pro|ine-pro|*terh₂-}}, {{inh|cel-pro|ine-pro||*tr̥h₂éy}} Proto-Indo-European *tr̥h₂éy Head templates: {{head|cel-pro|preposition}} *trei
