Proper name

Forms: c-i-š-p-i-š [romanization], Cišpiš [romanization]
Etymology: Uncertain. Either from Old Iranian or Elamite: *due to the Old Iranian character of the names of Teispes's father and son, Mayrhofer considers it likely that the name Cišpiš is also Old Iranian; ** Hinz suggested a link to Avestan Avestan 𐬐𐬀𐬉𐬯- (kaēs-, “to teach”) (𐬗𐬌𐬱- (ciš-)), Abaev proposed that it is an Old Iranian cognate of Sanskrit सुशिश्वि (sú-śiśvi-, “growing well”), while Harmatta proposed a link to Sogdian Sogdian 𐼿𐼾𐼰𐼷𐽁 (cpʾyš /capīš/, “leader”), but Tavernier considers these unconvincing; *due to the Elamite origin of the name of Teispes's descendant Cyrus, Tavernier has proposed a derivation from Elamite [Term?] (/šišna/)/[Term?] (/šišni/, “beautiful”), which occurs in the form Elamite [script needed] (šiš) in compounds, and the verbal stem Elamite [Term?] (/piš-/, “to renew, restore”) has been proposed, although the use of the sign Z/Šiš to write the first part makes this proposal since Elamite šišn- during the Achaemenid period was always written with ŠI (𒅆) and never with ZÍ (𒍢). This proposal is, however, rejected by Schmitt, who prefers an Iranian origin.
