Noun

IPA: [ˈdɐrˑʒɐs]
Etymology: Cognate with Latvian dārzs, with further origin outside of Baltic uncertain. Smoczynski suggests a derivation from dir̃žas (“belt”), which he tentatively derives from Proto-Indo-European *derǵʰ- (“fenced lot”); one possible cognate is Proto-Germanic *targǭ (“edge, rim, border”) (whence English target). He also proposes an alternative etymology from a metathesis of the root underlying žárdas (“rack for drying flax”), the latter which is generally thought to be related to gar̃das (“fence, enclosure”).
