It his Etymological Dictionary of Latin, De Vaan proposes that the term is a variant of ab that was probably secondarily created on the model of parallels such as ec- beside ex-. However, he retracted this position in a later publication, stating that—because of the existence of external cognates (i.e. Ancient Greek ἄψ (áps, “back again; in return”))—it was more likely that the word is inherited. In any case, the word was originally used before words starting in voiceless plosives [k] and [t], just like the prefix variant abs-.",
