Noun

IPA: [ko̞dɯŋʌ̹] [SK-Standard, Seoul] Forms: godeung'eo [romanization]
Etymology: First attested in the Yeogeo yuhae (譯語類解 / 역어유해), 1690, as Early Modern Korean 고도리 (Yale: kwotwoli), if only the Hangul script is taken into account. However, the word is actually attested since the thirteenth century in the Sinicized form 古道魚/古道鱼. In the late eighteenth century, this native word was misconstrued as being Sino-Korean (possibly influenced by the 古道魚 spelling) and the Sino-Korean suffix ㅇ어 (魚, -ngeo, “fish”) was attached, producing the modern form.
