Etymology: Sanskritized form of វាត់ (vŏət), based upon वाट (vāṭa, “enclosure”). From Proto-Mon-Khmer *wa(a)t/*wi(i)t (“to go round, bend, curve, turn”). Cognate with Temiar wiit and Proto-Khasian *wa(a)t. Other roots connoting encircling that start with a labial approximant include វង់ (vŭəng), វាំង (vĕəng), and វិល (vɨl).
