"ሰይፍ" meaning in Ge'ez

See ሰይፍ in All languages combined, or Wiktionary

Noun

Forms: säyf [romanization], አስያፍ [plural]
Etymology: Either a loan from Ancient Greek ξίφος (xíphos), or from a common original source. The same word is probably preserved in Egyptian zft, Coptic ⲥⲏϥⲉ (sēfe). Dümichen (1867) suggested an Old Semitic saïf or sêf, Myres (1930) a possible Libyan or "Sea Peoples" word. Compare Safaitic 𐪊𐪐 (s¹f /sayp/), Arabic سَيْف (sayf), Hebrew סַיִף (sáyip̄), Aramaic סַיְפָּא (saypā) Etymology templates: {{cog|grc|ξίφος}} Ancient Greek ξίφος (xíphos), {{cog|egy|zft}} Egyptian zft, {{cog|cop|ⲥⲏϥⲉ}} Coptic ⲥⲏϥⲉ (sēfe), {{cog|sem-saf|𐪊𐪐|ts=sayp}} Safaitic 𐪊𐪐 (s¹f /sayp/), {{cog|ar|سَيْف|tr=sayf}} Arabic سَيْف (sayf), {{cog|he|סַיִף|tr=sáyip̄}} Hebrew סַיִף (sáyip̄), {{cog|arc|סַיְפָּא|tr=saypā}} Aramaic סַיְפָּא (saypā) Head templates: {{head|gez|noun|plural|አስያፍ|and|አስይፍት|f1tr=ʾäsyaf|f2tr=ʾäsyəft|tr=säyf}} ሰይፍ • (säyf) (plural አስያፍ (ʾäsyaf), and አስይፍት (ʾäsyəft))
