Etymology: From Middle French psaulme, from Old French psalme, salme, borrowed from Latin psalmus, from Ancient Greek ψαλμός (psalmós). The p- was silent well into Modern French, but later came to be pronounced by analogy with learned words with ps- which had since been borrowed from Greek.
