Hitchcock, a developer who renamed the area in 1872 and sold off land for residential development. Another theory is that real estate developer Thomas Waite Howard, who became the first postmaster in 1872, petitioned to have the post office name changed to Corona in 1870, suggesting that it was the “crown of Queens County”. A third theory is that it is derived from the crown used as an emblem by the Crown Building Company, which is said to have developed the area. The Italian immigrants who moved into the new housing stock referred to the neighborhood by Italian corona or Spanish corona (“crown”).\n* (surname): 1. From Spanish corona and Italian corona (“crown”), perhaps applied as a habitational name for someone who lived in a house with this sign, or as a nickname for someone who had a tonsure in fulfillment of a religious vow or who had influence and power. 2. From Italian Corona, a female given name, of the same derivation.\n* (given name): From Late Latin Corōna, meaning “crown”.\n* (beer): From Spanish corona (“crown”).\n* (coronavirus): Clipping of coronavirus, from corona + virus.\n* (cigar): From Spanish La Corona (literally “The Crown”), the name of a brand.", "head_templates": [ { "args": {}, "expansion": "Corona", "name": "en-proper noun" } ], "lang": "English", "lang_code": "en", "pos": "name", "senses": [ { "categories": [ { "kind": "place", "langcode": "en", "name": "Places in Alabama, USA", "orig": "en:Places in Alabama, USA", "parents": [ "Places", "Names", "All topics", "Proper nouns", "Terms by semantic function", "Fundamental", "Nouns", "Lemmas" ], "source": "w" }, { "kind": "place", "langcode": "en", "name": "Places in the United States", "orig": "en:Places in the United States", "parents": [ "Places", "Names", "All topics", "Proper nouns", "Terms by semantic function", "Fundamental", "Nouns", "Lemmas" ], "source": "w" }, { "kind": "place", "langcode": "en", "name": "Unincorporated communities in Alabama, USA", "orig": "en:Unincorporated communities in Alabama, USA", "parents": [ "Unincorporated communities", "Places", "Names", "All topics", "Proper nouns", "Terms by semantic function", "Fundamental", "Nouns", "Lemmas" ], "source": "w" }, { "kind": "place", "langcode": "en", "name": "Unincorporated communities in the United States", "orig": "en:Unincorporated communities in the United States", "parents": [ "Unincorporated communities", "Places", "Names", "All topics", "Proper nouns", "Terms by semantic function", "Fundamental", "Nouns", "Lemmas" ], "source": "w" }, { "_dis": "11 11 11 11 11 11 11 11 3 3 3 1 1 1 1", "kind": "other", "name": "English trademarks", "parents": [], "source": "w+disamb" } ], "glosses": [ "A place in the United States:", "An unincorporated community in Walker County, Alabama." ], "id": "en-Corona-en-name-JxhopG~Q", "links": [ [ "United States", "United States#English" ], [ "Walker County", "Walker County#English" ], [ "Alabama", "Alabama#English" ] ] }, { "categories": [ { "kind": "place", "langcode": "en", "name": "Cities in California, USA", "orig": "en:Cities in California, USA", "parents": [ "Cities", "Places", "Polities", "Names", "All topics", "Proper nouns", "Terms by semantic function", "Fundamental", "Nouns", "Lemmas" ], "source": "w" }, { "kind": "place", "langcode": "en", "name": "Cities in the United States", "orig": "en:Cities in the United States", "parents": [ "Cities", "Places", "Polities", "Names", "All topics", "Proper nouns", "Terms by semantic function", "Fundamental", "Nouns", "Lemmas" ], "source": "w" }, { "kind": "place", "langcode": "en", "name": "Places in California, USA", "orig": "en:Places in California, USA", "parents": [ "Places", "Names", "All topics", "Proper nouns", "Terms by semantic function", "Fundamental", "Nouns", "Lemmas" ], "source": "w" }, { "kind": "place", "langcode": "en", "name": "Places in the United States", "orig": "en:Places in the United States", "parents": [ "Places", "Names", "All topics", "Proper nouns", "Terms by semantic function", "Fundamental", "Nouns", "Lemmas" ], "source": "w" }, { "_dis": "6 17 16 15 6 6 6 6 4 2 2 1 1 1 1 3 1 2 2", "kind": "other", "name": "Pages with 5 entries", "parents": [], "source": "w+disamb" }, { "_dis": "5 19 18 17 5 5 5 5 4 1 1 1 1 1 1 3 2 2 2", "kind": "other", "name": "Pages with entries", "parents": [], "source": "w+disamb" }, { "_dis": "7 18 17 17 7 7 7 7 4 2 2 1 2 1 1", "kind": "other", "name": "English entries with incorrect language header", "parents": [ "Entries with incorrect language header", "Entry maintenance" ], "source": "w+disamb" }, { "_dis": "11 11 11 11 11 11 11 11 3 3 3 1 1 1 1", "kind": "other", "name": "English trademarks", "parents": [], "source": "w+disamb" }, { "_dis": "6 17 16 16 6 6 6 6 4 3 3 7 2 2 2", "kind": "topical", "langcode": "en", "name": "Beer", "orig": "en:Beer", "parents": [ "Alcoholic beverages", "Beverages", "Recreational drugs", "Drinking", "Food and drink", "Liquids", "Drugs", "Human behaviour", "All topics", "Matter", "Pharmacology", "Human", "Fundamental", "Chemistry", "Nature", "Biochemistry", "Medicine", "Sciences", "Biology", "Healthcare", "Health", "Body" ], "source": "w+disamb" } ], "examples": [ { "ref": "2019 October 28, Hayley Peterson, “LuLaRoe plans to lay off 167 warehouse workers amid legal battle”, in Business Insider:", "text": "LuLaRoe is laying off 167 employees at a warehouse in Corona, California, on December 20, according to a company filing.
