Noun

IPA: /ˈdoːmineː/, [ˈdoʊ̯mineɪ̯] [Northern], [ˈdoːmineː] [Southern] Audio: Nl-dominee.ogg Forms: dominees [plural], domineetje [diminutive, neuter]
Etymology: Ca. 1500, borrowed from Latin domine, vocative of dominus (“mister, sir, lord”). Originally also used of Catholic priests and more broadly of other respected individuals (especially medical doctors). The restriction to Protestantism appears to be from the 18th century. The final -ee either represents a learned pronunciation or has to do with the two consecutive unstressed syllables (cf. Afrikaans skaduwee, weduwee).
