Two etymologies have been proposed for the (controversial) oldest attestation: a derivation from Proto-Germanic *Mannarîk (a personal name) with collectivising suffix *-ja- and a derivation from an unidentified prehistoric name with the suffix *-ikja-. The newer attestations are derived either from Proto-Celtic *Maleriacum (literally “settlement belonging to Malerius”) or Proto-Germanic *Maldarîk (a personal name) with collectivising suffix *-ja-.\nCompare Blerick, Bunnik, Cuijk, Geverik, Lopik, Mook, Niftrik, Odijk, Varik, Woezik and Fellerich.\nThe surname derives from the toponym.",
