Etymology: First attested as Luchterveld in 1899. Calque of West Frisian Luchtenfjild, a compound of an unclear first element and fjild (“field”). The first element may be Dutch Low Saxon luchter (“bundle of reeds used as kindling”) or a toponym *Lucht. Alternatively, the toponym may be a compound of lucht (“air”) and veld (“field”), used here as a reference to the open expanse of fields around the hamlet. May have originally been the name of an inn.
