IPA: /ˈleːu̯.ɑr.də(n)/ Audio: Nl-Leeuwarden.ogg
Etymology: First attested as liunuuero and liunuert in 1038-1057. Compound of an unclear first element and Old Frisian ward (“artificial mound used for habitation”). The first element has been variously interpreted as a personal name, a derivation from Proto-Germanic *hleunjô- (“lee, refuge”) and a term cognate to Gothic *𐌷𐌻𐌰𐌹𐌽𐍃 (*hlains, “hill”).
