Proper name

IPA: /ˌɣroː.təˈʋiː.rʏm/
Etymology: First attested as Groterwierum in 1529. Calque of West Frisian Greate Wierrum, derived in turn from a compound of Old Frisian grāt (“great, big”) (from Proto-West Germanic *graut, from Proto-Germanic *grautaz) and the dative plural form of wier (“artificial mound used for habitation”) (probably related to *warjan (“to ward off, defend, protect”)). The element great was added to distinguish the settlement from Lutkewierum.
