The element boven was added fairly recently to distinguish the settlement from Beneden-Leeuwen. Compare Leeuwen, Leeuwte, Heiligerlee, Westerlee, Denderleeuw, Gors-Opleeuw, Lauw, Sint-Pieters-Leeuw and Zoutleeuw.",
