Proper name

IPA: /ˈɑs.pə.rə(n)/
Etymology: First attested as asperen in 893. Etymology uncertain. One proposed etymology interprets the name as a derivation from a hydronym in turn derived from Old Dutch aspa (“aspen, Populus tremula”) with the suffix -arô-. Hydronyms are rarely derived from tree names, however. It is more likely that the toponym is derived from an older hydronym Proto-Germanic *Aspurô, which might in turn be derived from *aspa- (“bend, hook”). Compare Afferden, Asper and Asperden.
