Proper name

IPA: /ˈɑ.pəlˌtɛrn/
Etymology: First attested as de apeltre in 1139. Likely a compound of Old Dutch apel (“apple”) and *tere (“tree”). Proposed derivations from Proto-Germanic *apuldra- (“apple tree”) or Old Dutch apuldra (“apple tree”) are phonologically problematic. The element *tere appears to have been reinterpreted as heem (“home, settlement”) at some point. Compare Apeldoorn, Aperloo, Ter Apel, Apuldram, Apeldorn and Appeldorn. See also Elsteren.
