Noun

IPA: /t͡ɕi̯ä⁵⁵ xu̯ɔ²¹⁴⁻²¹ y³⁵/ [Mandarin, Sinological-IPA], /t͡ɕi̯ä⁵⁵ xu̯ɔ²¹⁴⁻²¹ y³⁵/ Chinese transliterations: jiāhuǒyú [Mandarin, Pinyin], ㄐㄧㄚ ㄏㄨㄛˇ ㄩˊ [Mandarin, bopomofo], jiāhuǒyú [Hanyu-Pinyin, Mandarin], jiahuǒyú [Mandarin, Tongyong-Pinyin], chia¹-huo³-yü² [Mandarin, Wade-Giles], jyā-hwǒ-yú [Mandarin, Yale], jiahuooyu [Gwoyeu-Romatsyh, Mandarin], цзяхоюй [Mandarin, Palladius], czjaxojuj [Mandarin, Palladius]
Etymology: From an otherwise unattested Old Korean word, probably *kapɨl, which later developed to Seoul Korean 가오리 (gaori), Gyeongsang dialect 가부리 (gaburi). The second character is a typical example of 훈가자(訓假字) (hun'gaja), using the Chinese character for "fire" to represent the syllable *pɨl because the ancient Korean word for "fire" was *pɨl (> Middle Korean 블 (pul)).
