Etymology: Also found with metathesis in Jewish Babylonian Aramaic חורלא and Classical Syriac ܚܘܪܠܐ (ḥūrəlā, “a kind of Lathyrus”), and Hebrew חָרֻל (ḥārūl). Perhaps retaining the older order from Imperial Aramaic 𐡇𐡋𐡅𐡓 (ḥlwr /⁠ḥallūr⁠/, “1/40th of a shekel”, literally “bean”), used by the Achaemenids as its smallest monetary measure. From Akkadian 𒄬𒇻𒊒 (ḫallūru, ḫallāru, ḫillūru, ḫullūru /⁠ḫal-lu-ru⁠/, “chickpea; 1/10 shekel”), itself less likely to be of Semitic origin as the close pairing of /l/ and /r/ is not typical. Suggested ultimate Hurrian origin, possibly by way of Ugaritic 𒄷𒌌𒇻𒊒 (ḫu-ul-lu-ru), which is attested only in syllabic form. Compare Akkadian 𒄒 (/⁠šallūru⁠/, “plum”), another Hurrian loan into the Semitic family with the same pattern.
