Noun

IPA: /sé.la.kʰos/, /ˈse.la.xos/, /ˈse.la.xos/, /sé.la.kʰos/ (note: 5ᵗʰ BCE Attic), /ˈse.la.kʰos/ (note: 1ˢᵗ CE Egyptian), /ˈse.la.xos/ (note: 4ᵗʰ CE Koine), /ˈse.la.xos/ (note: 10ᵗʰ CE Byzantine), /ˈse.la.xos/ (note: 15ᵗʰ CE Constantinopolitan)
Etymology: The formation resembles στέλεχος (stélekhos), τάριχος (tárikhos) and τέμαχος (témakhos). Connected with σέλας (sélas, “light, glow, beam”) already by Galen, because of the phosphorescent light of certain cartilaginous fishes; yet the suffix "-αχ-" may point to a Pre-Greek origin. The old connection with Proto-Germanic *selhaz (“seal”) is untenable.
