Noun

IPA: /plá.ta.nos/, /ˈpla.ta.nos/, /ˈpla.ta.nos/, /plá.ta.nos/ (note: 5ᵗʰ BCE Attic), /ˈpla.ta.nos/ (note: 1ˢᵗ CE Egyptian), /ˈpla.ta.nos/ (note: 4ᵗʰ CE Koine), /ˈpla.ta.nos/ (note: 10ᵗʰ CE Byzantine), /ˈpla.ta.nos/ (note: 15ᵗʰ CE Constantinopolitan)
Etymology: Traditionally derived from πλατύς (platús, “broad, flat”), or taken to be inherited directly from Proto-Indo-European *pl̥th₂enós (“wide, broad”), under the assumption that the tree was named after its broad leaves or flat patches of bark. However, based on the opaque morphology of the oldest attested form πλατάνιστος (platánistos), Beekes rejects this etymology, and in view of the "local botanic" semantic category, derives the word from Pre-Greek. Thus, the resemblance with πλατύς (platús) was shaped later by folk etymology.
