Noun

IPA: /ka.dý.taːs/, /kaˈðy.tas/, /kaˈði.tas/, /ka.dý.taːs/ (note: 5ᵗʰ BCE Attic), /kaˈdy.tas/ (note: 1ˢᵗ CE Egyptian), /kaˈðy.tas/ (note: 4ᵗʰ CE Koine), /kaˈðy.tas/ (note: 10ᵗʰ CE Byzantine), /kaˈði.tas/ (note: 15ᵗʰ CE Constantinopolitan)
Etymology: From Aramaic, represented by Jewish Babylonian Aramaic כְּשׁוּתָא (kəšūṯā, “dodder”), Classical Syriac ܟܫܽܘܬܳܐ (kəšūṯā, “dodder”), Arabic كُشُوث (kušūṯ, “dodder”). See these entries for their possible origin. According to de Lagarde καδύτας is completely unreal as a transcription error, that however Pliny already had in his manuscript of Theophrast, and only κασύτας (kasútas) has been spoken.
