Noun [Maltese]

IPA: /ˈtɪː.ʔa/ Forms: twieqi [plural], tiqan [obsolete, plural], twejqa [diminutive]
Etymology: From Arabic طاقة (ṭāqa, “window”), from طاق (ṭāq, “arch, doorway”), from Middle Persian tʾg (tāg, “arch”). The form tieqa instead of *taqa probably goes back to a variant *تاقة (*tāqa), in which the initial had been dissimilated against the q; compare dejjaq and others. Compare also Moroccan Arabic تاقة (tāqa) alongside طاقة (ṭāqa).
