Noun [Albanian]

IPA: /taˈɾɔːɡz(ə)/ Forms: tarogza [plural], tarogza [definite], tarogzat [definite, plural]
Etymology: Unclear. According to Çabej, the word is attested in Pult. It could be an early borrowing from Doric Greek θωράκειον (thōrákeion) or θωράκιον (thōrákion), a diminutive of θώραξ (thṓrax, “breastplate, cuirass, corselet”), or directly from the latter. Alternatively, it could be a later loan from Byzantine Greek θώραξ (thṓrax) (with a metathesis of the vowels) due to the mechanical stress adjustment, which only started taking place in the late Latin period. Orel suggests that it was coined by Gjergj Fishta (as he used it in his translation of the Iliad), representing a derivative in -zë based on tarok (“young bull”).
