Verb [Lithuanian]

Forms: smõgti [canonical], smõgia [present, third-person], smõgė [past, third-person]
Etymology: From Proto-Balto-Slavic *smāg- (“to strike”), and cognate with Proto-Slavic *smagati, whence Polish smagać (“to lash, whip”). The Balto-Slavic root's further origin is uncertain, but it appears to be onomatopoeic, and may be cognate with Swedish smacka (“to smack (one's lips)”), Dutch smak (“crash, blow, smack”). It is, however, possible that the Balto-Slavic and Germanic formations were formed independently of each other.
