Etymology: From verb jula (more common as jula opp (“beat up”)). Attested by Aasen. Also, attested as hiuling by Jacob Nicolai Wilse in 1780 in his dictionary of Spydeberg dialect. According to Nynorsk Dictionary, from Old Norse gyrða, whence also gyrda and gjorda (shift of /rð/ into /l/ is common in many Norwegian dialects and sometimes made its way into standard spelling, like e.g. støl (“stiff in muscles”), and therefrom further into dialects, which do not have this feature).
