Etymology: From an unattested Vulgar Latin *blēta, from Latin bēta (from which it takes the feminine gender) by contamination of blitum (a kind of spinach) (from which it changed the original ⟨bl-⟩ into ⟨j-⟩). Compare Sicilian gidi, Italian bieta, Catalan bleda, French blette. The transition from bl- to j- in is typical in the south-eastern area of Sicily, compare also Sicilian jancu and jastimia.
