Popularly theorized to come from the English buy toller or by toller.\nAccording to a popular legend, during the construction of the Ceará railways (some authors erroneously date the occurrence to the 19th century), Mr.Hull hired dozens of British engineers to supervise the works. One of them, whose name is unknown, was known for being very strict with the local workers and was thought to be homosexual (given his effeminate mannerisms). During the work of laying the tracks, his obsession with maintaining the track gauge became famous. When addressing the workers, the anonymous engineer would say \"watch out for the baitola!\", \"watch out for the baitola!\", pronouncing the word \"bitola\" with a strong English accent. By repeating the word bitola so many times as \"baitola\", he ended up being nicknamed \"Mr. Baitola\" by the local workers. The nickname ended up being incorporated into the popular vocabulary of the northeast (mainly in Ceará) to pejoratively designate a homosexual individual.",
