Noun [Latin]

IPA: /as.piˈlo.ɡi.a/ [Classical], [äs̠pɪˈɫ̪ɔɡiä] [Classical], /as.piˈlo.d͡ʒi.a/ (note: modern Italianate Ecclesiastical), [äspiˈlɔːd͡ʒiä] (note: modern Italianate Ecclesiastical) Forms: aspilogiae [genitive]
Etymology: Coined by Sir Henry Spelman circa 1595 as the title to his treatise on coats of arms, from ἀσπίς ("shield") + -λογία ("study of"). Sir Anthony Wagner argued in his Catalogue of Mediaeval Arms (1950) that on etymological grounds a better form of the word would have been "Aspidologia," but retained Spelman's innovation.
