Proper name [Dutch]

IPA: /ˈʋɪnt.raːk/
Etymology: First attested as Wintrachen in 1595. Etymology uncertain. Proposed derivations from Gallo-Roman Latin *Vinderiacum or *vinitoriacum (“place where wine is produced”) are unsatisfactory. An interpretation of the toponym as "location that is subject to a lot of wind" (cf. Heurtebise) is also unconvincing, as is that which seeks to derive the toponym from Middle Dutch *Winnerack (“strip of land owned by a tenant”). Perhaps comparable to Wintbraken. See also Limburgish De Wèndjraak.
