Proper name [Dutch]

IPA: /ˈʋaː.pə(n)ˌvɛlt/
Etymology: First attested as wapegelde in the middle of the 12th century. Etymology unknown. The toponym has been compared to Wapenfeld in Schleswig-Holstein, which is derived from a compound formed from Middle Low German wapel (“stagnant water, swamp”) and velt (“field”). The oldest attestations of the Dutch toponym, however, do not morphologically resemble their alleged German counterpart. Compare De Wopereis.
