Etymology: Attested as t Nieuwe Schilt in 1680. Compound of nieuw (“new”) and an unclear element. The second element may derive from West Frisian skil (“small seashell”) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -t or, alternatively, be cognate to the hydronym Schelde.
