Proper name [Dutch]

IPA: /ˌlʏt.kəˈʋiː.rʏm/
Etymology: First attested as liticawerum in 1381. Calque of West Frisian Lytsewierrum, a compound of Old Frisian lītik (“little, small”) (from Proto-West Germanic *lūtil, from Proto-Germanic *lūtilaz) and the dative plural form of weer (“artificial mound used for habitation”) (probably related to *warjan (“to ward off, defend, protect”)). The element lyts was added to distinguish the settlement from Grotewierum.
