From being a waterfall (“falls”) named in honour of Sir Winston Churchill, by Newfoundland premier Joey Smallwood, renamed along with the river it is situated in, just prior to the commencement of the hydroelectric project; renaming from McLean Falls, itself renamed from Grand Falls, which it was labelled instead of the native Innu name Patshishetshuanau. The community is named after the nearby waterfalls.
